Description
We are on the peak that separates the West Jiu Basin from the Cerna Basin, near the Jiu-Cerna Pass, at approx. 2000 meters altitude. In the foreground is the wooded ridge of Ciernes de Cernişoara - their image here is misleading, these ridges being very rocky and wild, despite the dense beech forest that covers most of them. Somewhere down there, below Ciuceve, is Izbucul Cerna. The pyramidal mountain that rises in front of us is Ciuceava Mare.
This photo shows the Cerna Valley deepening to the southwest - that is, to the right side of the image. The surprising straight line of the Cerna, which splits the Carpathians in length, and not in width (unlike Olt, for example), is due to a major tectonic accident - namely the appearance of a huge fault system in the Carpathians, which led to the splitting of the Southerners. and the formation of a southern peak (M. Parâng, Vâlcan, Mehedinţi) and northern (respectively Şureanu, Retezat, Godeanu, Cernei Mountains). On a map of Romania, this fault can be easily traced, because both Cerna and Jiul de Vest, Jieţul and Lotrul settled on it.
